This style was a popular working mans hat throughout the 1800s. Often referred to as a "Wheel Cap" or "Mechanic Hat" this style could be seen in many labor fields throughout the 19th century, from Canal work and Sailors, Railroaders, Blacksmiths, Farmers, Factory Workers, and more.
 
The style carried over into military tradition, as variations of this pattern can still be found today in Military and Police dress uniforms.
